Haunted Portland!

Posted on October 27, 2010
Do you believe in ghosts?  In honor of Halloween, today's blog is dedicated to haunted places in Portland.  I'm not saying that these places are truly haunted but that's the word on the street!

Witch's Castle - located in Forest Park, the old stone building was once a trading shack located at the cross roads of two trails leading to the Oregon Coast.  There are varying reports as to why the site is haunted but the most wide spread report is that the first hanging execution in the state took place there.

White Eagle Saloon and Hotel - now a McMenimans and still in operation, it can be found on North Russell Street in Portland under the Fremont Bridge.  Built in 1899, it was originally a respectable establishment but as the area started to turn industrial, the clientele changed and tradition says that some male customers were sometimes shanghaied onto ships and it was known as a brothel as well.  Considered to be the most haunted building in Portland, there are a number of rumored paranormal activities that take place including freezer doors opening and closing by themselves, coins falling from the ceiling, sounds of a woman crying can be heard at times, all the doors and windows of the 13 hotels rooms located upstairs have been known to open and shut by themselves, an entity walks through the hallway from the bar to the men's bathroom and flushes the toilet, chairs move by themselves, and much more.  Go check it out for yourself!

St. Johns Theater - Located on North Lombard, it is now a movie theater.  It was originally built as a dramatic arts production theater.  Current employees and patrons have told about encounters with an actor from past productions who haunts the old backstage and main theater auditorium.  So next time you are watching a movie there and feel a chill, you'll know why!

Oaks Park Amusement Park - Located in Sellwood and built in 1890, there have been reports of a lone child wearing 1970's clothing haunting the park.
