Keys For Kindness

Posted on July 28, 2010
Over the years I have collected a whole jar of keys that I have no idea to what or whom they belong.  Call it a side effect to being a realtor.  I've continued to collect them instead of throwing them away hoping that I would eventually find a use for them.  I'm happy to announce that I found a GREAT cause that supports Multiple Sclerosis by recycling keys.  www.keysforkindness.com

I plan on sending off all my keys on Thursday, August 5th and until then, I'll be holding a KEY DRIVE!  I will have a jar at the front desk of my office where anyone can come and drop off their old, useless keys.  If it is after hours, feel free to slip the keys under the front mat.

My Office Address:
4200 Mercantile Drive, Suite 700
Lake Oswego, OR 97035

Drop your keys off from July 28th to August 4th!

Oregon Beer Facts!

Posted on July 22, 2010
The Oregon Brewer's Festival is happening this weekend on the waterfront.  The fun starts today and goes until Sunday.  Even if you're not a beer drinker, you're probably aware that Oregon has it's own national beer identity and that it plays a role in Oregon's economy.  In honor of the Festival this weekend I've found some fun Oregon Beer Facts:

  • Oregon Breweries directly employ more than 5,200 people, many at family wage jobs.
  • Total economic impact from the beer industry on Oregon's economy is $2.25 billion.
  • Over the last 5 years Oregon Breweries created 2300 jobs.
  • Over the last 5 years Oregon Brewed beer consumed in Oregon rose from 9.9% to 12%.
  • Over the last 5 years for every 1,000 barrels Oregon Brewed beer consumed in Oregon, more than 30 jobs were created.
  • Oregon is the second largest producer of craft beer in the US.
  • Oregon is the 4th largest craft beer market in the US in supermarket sales.
  • 37% Percent of all draft beer consumed in Oregon is brewed in Oregon.
  • Oregon has the 4th highest percentage of beer draft sales in the US.
  • Oregonians consumed 2.72 million barrels of beer in 2008, of that more than 327,000 barrels were made in Oregon or about 12 percent of the total beer consumed in Oregon - the highest percentage of local craft beer consumption in the country.
  • Oregon is the No. 2 hop growing state in the country with a 2008 crop value of $38,000,000 which ranks 18th in Oregon's five billion dollar agricultural economy.
  • There are currently 81 brewing companies, operating 106 brewing facilities in Oregon.

What would MacGyver Do?

Posted on July 20, 2010
I receive weekly emails from the National Association of Realtors and there are always great articles about real estate related news, the mortgage industry, etc. but I don't always have the time to keep up with reading all the info.  The other day I decided to take a minute and go through some of their past articles and I came upon the BEST series of articles!!!  It was all about "What would MacGyver do/use to fix home repairs."  First off, I love MacGyver and second, some of the ideas were really useful.  Here are some of the highlights:

WHAT MACGYVER DID WITH A PAPER CLIP:  The question is: What didnt he do when a paper clip was within reach? MacGyver hotwired cars, picked locks, disarmed missiles, and everything in between.  What you can do:
  • Unclog spray bottles. Unbend the paper clip and use one end to clear tiny clogs in your perfume bottle, lotion pump, etc.
  • Pit cherries. Unfold a paper clip at its center, insert one hooked end into the top or bottom of the cherry. Once you feel the pit, lift it up and out.
  • Reach tiny reset buttons inside electronics. Unfold and use the end to poke away.
  • Temporarily replace a broken zipper. Untwist a small paper clip and slip the end through the zipper hole, twist it back, and unzip.
  • Pick a small lock on a jewelry box, screen door, or a basic center key bathroom door. Untwist a paper clip and slip the end inside the lock. Then jiggle it to open the locking mechanism.
WHAT MACGYVER DID WITH DUCT TAPE:  Used duct tape to seal a hole in a hot air balloon, allowing him to escape his pursuers.  What you can do:
  • Fix a slow-running toilet. Clear the clogged flush passage with wire, then empty the water tank and seal the passage hole with duct tape. Fill the tank with a quart of vinegar and leave overnight.
  • Weatherproof windows. Use strips of duct tape to make windows air tight until you can fix or replace them.
  • Make a temporary roof shingle. Wrap strips of duct tape across a ¼ inch thick piece of plywood cut to size.
  • Tie off loose wires. Wrap small, thin strips of duct tape around exposed ends.
  • Patch holes and tears in duct work, dryer vents, and a torn vacuum hose to temporarily seal leaks.
WHAT HE DID WITH TOOTHPASTE:  Used plastic explosives disguised as toothpaste to create a diversion, allowing him to disarm his captor.  What you can do:
  • Patch small holes in your walls. Use a putty knife or butter knife to smooth the toothpaste into the hole. Then sand the toothpaste to smooth the surface.
  • Erase crayon marks from walls. Grab some non-gel toothpaste and a scrub brush, then just wipe until the marks are gone.
  • Shine chrome. Smear non-gel toothpaste on the chrome surface, and use a soft, dry cloth to wipe it down. The fine abrasive in the paste polishes the chrome to a spotless shine.
  • Deodorize a baby bottle. Apply toothpaste to your bottle brush to scrub out the stale milk smell. Then rinse it away.

Lake Oswego Centennial Festival!

Posted on July 14, 2010
Let's get the party started!  Lake Oswego celebrates 100 years this weekend with a festival at Luscher Farm this Saturday, July 17th.  There will be lots of live music, pavilions show casing the city's past, and lots of family friendly fun.

The event starts at 11:00 a.m. and ends with an outdoor showing of "The Blind Side" at 9:30 p.m.  There will be a beer and wine garden and tons of good food.  L.O. locals and one of my favorite country bands Cloverdayle will be playing at 12:30!  Hope to see you there!

Oregon Foreclosure Rate Jumps 20% in 1st Quarter

Posted on July 8, 2010
Hearing that Oregon is now #3 in the country in foreclosures after the first quarter of this year is disheartening.  The sudden increase is in part due to the fact that we entered the recession later than other states and are now seeing a peak when other states have already crashed and began their recovery.  Nevertheless, it is a sign of our continuing struggling economy!

The U.S. Treasury Department has listed Oregon as one of the 20 states hit hardest by foreclosures and has tentatively allocated $88 million dollars in federal assistance to struggling homeowners.  This money is estimated to help at least 6,300 homeowners starting late summer or early fall but according to the Oregonian, there are at least 22,653 homeowners already in foreclosure or more than 90 days delinquent on their mortgages as of January.

Many homeowners need to understand that foreclosure is not the only option.  We are all in this economic downturn together and there are a lot of options out there including short selling and loan modifications.  If you know of anyone who just wants to talk about options, give me a call or send an email...I would love to help!
